Target Skill SKILL MAIN IDEA The topic is what a piece of
writing is about. The main idea is the most important idea about the topic. Supporting details are small pieces of information that tell about the main idea.
Target Skill STRATEGY TEXT STRUCTURE Text structure is how a
selection is organized and written. To identify the
main idea, ask yourself what the paragraph or
selection is mostly about. To identify supporting
details, look for key words that tell you who, what,
when, where,
and why as you read.
SKILL ACCURACY, APPROPRIATE PACE/RATE AND EXPRESSION Reading accurately means reading the words that are there, not omitting words or substituting words. Reading at an appropriate pace and rate means reading at the right speed—not too fast and not too slow. Reading with expression means reading the words as if you were the character.
