WRITE A SHOPPING LIST
Ask students to write a list of
things to buy, using at least three
spelling words. Have students
share their lists by reading them
aloud to the class or by displaying
them on the bulletin board.
Although these words seem
easy, it is hard for third-graders
to spell them correctly because
the same sound can be formed
by different letter combinations. Alert students to these
frequently misspelled words
and encourage them to think carefully before they write them.

Spelling Strategy
Vowel Combinations
Words with these vowel combinations are easier to spell if students picture the words in their minds before spelling them.
