Use the Happy Birthday Mr. Kang materials from the Reading Street Centers Survival Kit to organize this week's centers.

AudioText CD, Student Edition

Listen to Happy Birthday, Mr. Kang
and "Back to the Wild: A Talk with a Wildlife Worker" as you follow or read along in your book. Listen for cause and effect relationships.

If there is anything you don't understand, you can listen again to any section.

MATERIALS
Collection of books for
self-selected reading,
reading log

Select a book you have already
read. Record the title of the book
in your reading log. You may want
to read with a partner.

You may choose to read any of the following:

Leveled Readers
ELL Readers
Stories written by classmates
Books from the library
Happy Birthday Mr. Kang

TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES
Read the Ten Important Sentences
for Happy Birthday Mr. Kang. Then
locate the sentences in the Student
Book.

BOOK CLUB Write a list of
questions about Happy Birthday
Mr. Kang. Read the questions
with a small group and discuss.

MATERIALS
Box or other container,
8 plastic eggs, 16 strips
of paper, dictionary, pencil

Match a word and its definition to make eggs for the hua mei's nest.

Write each word below on a
paper strip.
Write a definition on separate
paper strips. Use your own
words for the definitions.
Put the word and definition
strips in the container. Mix
them.
A partner looks through the
"nest" and finds a word and
its matching definition. He or
she puts the two matching
strips in an "egg" and places
it back in the container.
Repeat until all "eggs" are
complete.

definition. Write a sentence
with the word.

Plan a research report on Chinese American traditions.

On each piece of paper,
write a question you want
answered in your research
report. For example, you
might want to find out how
Chinese Americans
celebrate holidays.
Your questions should be
about Chinese American
traditions, including foods, languages, family, and
celebrations.
Use research materials to
learn the answers to your
questions.
Write the facts on the fact
cards.

EARLY FINISHERS Find China on
a world map. Write a paragraph describing the journey an immigrant would take from China to where you live.

MATERIALS
Books about birds, Internet
access, large sticky notes,
globe, pencil

Learn about a bird from a different continent.

Learn three or four
interesting facts about a
bird from the list below.
Write them on a sticky note.
Attach your facts to the
globe on the appropriate
continent.
