ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A STORY PREDICTIONS CHART about Happy Birthday Mr. Kang.
  • Ask students to read the title of the selection and preview the illustrations.
  • Have students think about what they already know about birthdays and
pets. Then have them make predictions about the story’s events in
    column 1.
  • Students should think about what clues they used to make their predictions
and write them in column 2.
  • Tell students that after they read the story, they will complete column 3.

BACKGROUND BUILDING AUDIO This week’s audio explores why people keep
birds as pets. After students listen, discuss what they found out about pet
birds and whether they would like to have one.

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and
Don’t Know.
Read each word to students and have them place a check mark in one of the
three columns: Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have seen or heard the
word; don’t know meaning); Don’t Know (don’t know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point
out that some of this week’s words have antonyms, or words that have the
opposite meaning (narrow/wide; chilly/warm).
Context Clues • Antonyms
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make
changes to their ratings.
Discuss the meanings of some of the vocabulary words with students. Ask
the following questions to clarify word meanings.
  • Is the gap in the fence too narrow for you to squeeze through?
  • Do you have a recipe for making these delicious cookies?
  • Do I look foolish in this costume?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
