Build Background
ACTIVATE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE
BEGIN A WEB about freedom of expression.
  • Have students write “freedom of expression” in the hub of the web. Ask
them to think about what they know about freedom of expression, including
why we value it in the United States. They should consider different forms of
    artistic expression.
  • Tell students that, as they read, they should look for details about artistic
expression and add information to the web.

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and Don’t Know.
Read each word to students and have them place a check in one of the three
columns: Know (know and can use); Have Seen (have heard or seen the word;
don’t know meaning); Don’t Know (don’t know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point out
that some of this week’s words have a long vowel in the first syllable (native, social,
local
) and follow the syllable pattern V/CV.
Syllable Pattern V/CV
Check graphic organizers with students at the end of the week and have them make
changes to their ratings.
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
