Multisyllabic words can be divided into parts to make spelling easier. Demonstrate this by writing the spelling words on the board and having students sound out the syllables of each word. Guide students in breaking the word into syllables to show the different parts.
grace + ful + ly = gracefully
FIND THE PATTERN Have

WRITE AN EDITORIAL
Have students write an editorial expressing their opinion about a subject. Their editorials should
use as many spelling words as possible. Have students read
their editorials aloud, or post
them on the bulletin board for everyone to see.
These words are difficult for thirdgraders to spell. Alert
students to these frequently misspelled words and
encourage them to break down each word into its smaller part before spelling.
