CONTEXT CLUES Context clues are the words and sentences around an unknown word. Sometimes an author uses a synonym as a context clue to explain an unfamiliar word. A synonym is a familiar word that has the same or almost the same meaning as another word. When you come across a word you don't know, look for a synonym as a context clue. The synonym can help you figure out the meaning of the unfamiliar word.
LESSON VOCABULARY
burro
puff
bursts
reply
factory
tune
glassblower

Target Skill SKILL GENERALIZE When you generalize, you
tell how several things are alike. For example, a generalization might tell how all the characters in a story are alike. Often, clue words such as most, many, all, or few signal that a statement is a generalization.
Target Skill STRATEGY PREDICT To predict means to
make a guess based on information in a piece of writing. Make generalizations as you read, then use the generalization to help you predict what might happen next in the story.
SKILL CHARACTERIZATION Characterization is the way an author describes and portrays a character. You show characterization by reading as if you are the character, making changes in your voice to bring the character to life.
