Listen to Elena's Serenade and "Leading People to Freedom" as you follow or read along in your book. When you are finished, make generalizations about Elena and the animals she meets.

Select a book you have already read. Record the title of the book in your reading log. You may want to read with a partner.You may choose to read any of the following:

TEN IMPORTANT SENTENCES Read the Ten Important Sentences for Elena's Serenade. Then locate the sentences in the Student Edition.
BOOK CLUB Write a review of the story. Include what you liked and what you did not like. Give examples to support your opinions.
MATERIALS Paper, pencil, scissors, dictionary
Write words and definitions on different shapes.
Elena blew glass in different shapes. Draw and cut out two stars, two birds, and two butterflies.
Pick six words from the list below. Write each word on a different shape.
Use the dictionary to learn the meaning of each word you chose. On the back of each shape, write a definition of the word.
Trade shapes with a partner. Read the word on the front and give a definition. Then turn the shape over and check your answer.

On the back cover, write a summary of the story.
EARLY FINISHERS On the inside front cover, write facts about the author. Also make up quotations and reviews from fictional people who have read the book.

Plan an improvement to your school.
Elena changed her father's mind about her glassblowing abilities. Changes were made at her house. What could be done to improve something at your school?
Decide what change you would like to see in your school.
Write a letter to the principal. Explain the change you would like to see. Tell why it is important. Give at least three convincing reasons why the change should be made.
EARLY FINISHERS What would your school be like if the principal agreed to make the change you suggest? Draw a picture to show what would happen after the improvement. Write a short paragraph to support your picture.

Write a group story on the computer.
One person writes a sentence about another adventure Elena could have.
Each group member adds another sentence to the story.
