BEGIN A PROBLEM AND SOLUTION CHART about overcoming problems in
order to follow your dreams.
  • Have students think of a time when they wanted to do something but were
unable to. Invite them to record their problem, including what they wanted to
achieve and why they could not accomplish it.
  • Next ask students to consider how they solved the problem and achieved
their goal. If they did not overcome the problem, have them think about
steps they took or steps they should have taken to overcome the problem.
Encourage students to add the information to the graphic organizer.
  • Tell students that, as they read, they should consider the problem Elena
encounters in following her dream. Ask them to note how Elena solves her
    problem.

WORD RATING CHART
Create word rating charts using the categories Know, Have Seen, and
Don’t Know.
Read each word to students and have them place a check mark in one of the
three columns: Know (know and can use), Have Seen (have seen or heard the
word; don’t know meaning), Don’t Know (don’t know the word).
Activate Prior Knowledge
Have students share where they may have seen some of these words. Point
out that some of this week’s words have synonyms (tune/melody; bursts/
explodes).
Context Clues • Synonyms
Check charts with students at the end of the week and have them make
changes to their ratings.
Discuss the meanings of some of the vocabulary words with students. Ask the
following questions to clarify word meanings.
  • Why don’t you reply when I ask you a question?
  • What is the name of that tune I’ve heard you humming all day?
  • Did you see the piñata burst and spill all the goodies?
Use the Multisyllabic Word Routine on p. DI•1 to help students read multisyllabic words.
