Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader The Statue of Liberty: From Paris to New York City, emphasizing the pace and using your voice to show expression. Have students note how you read without skipping or changing any of the words. Then read p. 3 very fast in a monotone voice. Do not read all the words. Have students identify the model that sounded better. Tell students that they will better understand a selection if they read all the words correctly at an appropriate rate and with expression.
PRACTICE Have students reread passages from The Statue of Liberty: From Paris to New York City with a partner or individually. For optimal fluency, they should reread three or four times. As students read, monitor fluency and provide corrective feedback. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
