The Statue of Liberty: From Paris to New York CityREINFORCE CONCEPTS This week's concept is American symbols. The Statue of Liberty is an American symbol of freedom. What are some other American symbols?
BEFORE READING Using the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1, guide students through the text focusing on key concepts and vocabulary. Ask questions such as:
p. 3 Look at the smaller picture. By what part of the Statue of Liberty are the men standing as the statue is being built?
p. 12 This is the day the statue was first shown. How do you think the people watching feel about it? (proud, happy)
Read pp. 3–4 aloud. Then do a choral reading of pp. 5–8. Have students read and discuss the remainder of the book with a partner. Ask: Why is the Statue of Liberty important to Americans?

BEFORE READING Review the words on Decodable Reader p. 81. Then have students blend these story words: unruly, focus, shyly, zookeeper, gentle, traits, China, picky. Be sure students understand the meanings of words such as unruly and traits.
Use the Picture Walk Routine on p. DI•1 to guide students through the text.
Preteach Phonics
VOWELS IN TOOTH AND COOK Tell students that sounds can be spelled in different ways. Write the words soon, flew, clue, and juice. Model blending soon. Then have students blend soon with you. How many vowels do you see in soon? (two) How many vowel sounds do you hear? (one) What vowel sound do you hear in soon? (/ü/) Which letters stand for that sound? (oo) Continue with flew, clue, and juice. Explain that oo, ew, ue, and ui can stand for the vowel sound /ü/. Write book and pull. Repeat the process, pointing out that the letters oo and u can stand for the vowel sound //.
