DAY 5

2
Reread for Fluency
MODEL Read aloud pp. 3–4 of the Leveled Reader A Different Drawing with fluency, self-correcting when you make one or two mistakes. Discuss how students should read silently in a similar way, with accuracy and self-correcting when they misread a word, in order to better understand. Then tell students that you are going to read the same pages silently. Model how to focus on the material you are reading. Then model inappropriate silent reading behavior, such as looking around the room. Have students tell you which model was better.
PRACTICE Have students find a quiet place in the classroom to reread passages from A Different Drawing silently. Remind students to block out noise and self-correct. Students in this group are assessed in Weeks 2 and 4.
