DEVELOP VOCABULARY Write the word
fascinated and ask students to define it in their
own words. (When you are fascinated by something, you are really interested in it.)
Give an example of something that you are fascinated by. Use the word fascinated when you tell about it. (Possible responses: I'm fascinated by snakes, video games, soccer.) Repeat this activity with the word intruder and other words from the Leveled Reader Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Use the Concept Vocabulary Routine on p. DI•1 as needed.

Read Leveled Reader
A Fantastic Field Trip
A Fantastic Field TripBEFORE READING Recall the Read Aloud "The Boy Who Stopped Time." For a while Julian was free to do as he pleased. How did his feelings about this freedom change? (First he was happy and excited. Then he became sad because he was all alone.) "The Boy Who Stopped Time" is a fantasy. Today you will read a fantasy about a field trip in which insects live free in a very special zoo.
CREATIVE THINKING Have students read the Leveled Reader independently. Encourage them to think critically and creatively. For example, ask:
  • What is mysterious about the zoo?
  • Why do you think the author wrote the story this way?
  • How could you add to the story to explain the size of the insects?
AFTER READING Have students select five or more unfamiliar words and determine their meanings. Then have students use the words as they write a short story about one of the giant insects escaping from the zoo. Have students meet with you to discuss their stories and how they used the words. Invite students to share their stories.
